New Lady Captain 2011/12

The new Lady Captain of the Vale Golf Club, Ladies Section - Pauline Lee began her year of captaincy on Tuesday 15th November with the formal "Drive-in”.

Pauline was supported by a number of well-wishers on a chilly overcast morning. She first took the customary "tot”, and to the delight of everyone opened her year with a sizzling drive down the fairway.

Pauline has named her charity for the year as "Worcestershire Breast Unit Campaign” and it benefited from a Prize Draw based upon the distance driven by the new Lady Captain.

The Golden Maggot Fishing Competition

Each year since 2009 the children of the Gregory and the Quy families take part in the "Golden Maggot" fishing competition. The idea originated from their two fishing mad Dads who remembered a 1970's television programme called "The Fishing Race". In that programme two teams challenged for...  you've guessed it... a trophy called "The Golden Maggot".

The children's version of the competition is also a battle of the sexes. Sarah Gregory and Annie Quy join forces to compete as 'Girls Hookin Good' while Matthew Gregory and John Quy compete as "The Custard Carps". In previous years the event has taken place at a venue in Northamptonshire but this year the teams wanted to use the excellent facilities at the Vale lake and the club were more than happy to oblige.

With the scores standing at one win apiece the competition was fiercely contested with Dad Bryan Quy commenting that "the children really enjoy the match and have a lot of fun.... but they also try very hard to win".

At the beginning of the 3 hour match the boys got off to a flying start with a number of common carp landed. However momentum began to shift and Sarah and Annie came back strongly in the second half catching some good common and mirror carp up to 2Ibs. Just when it appeared that the girls were running out clear winners both Matthew and John each caught a good size fish to put a question mark over the final result.

It was a tense weigh-in but the 2011 "Golden Maggot" winners were confirmed as "Girls Hookin Good" who recorded a weight of 14Ibs 12oz. In second place (cough) were "The Custard Carps" with a creditable weight of 11Ibs 12oz. Sarah and Annie were presented with their well earned trophy by Mum, Carole Gregory.

With the venue providing the perfect family environment and some excellent fishing both teams are looking forward to returning to the Vale lake for the 2012 event - the boys of course hoping to pull level.

The cake was cut by Paul Bille and Mary Rimell.  Paul Bille then spoke at how happy he was that the Bille family were involved with the Vale Golf Club.  The toast to the Vale was given by inaugural captain John McGowan and he drew on many of his early memories of the beginning of the Club.  John, like Mary, echoed the sentiment that it was good to see the Vale back in the hands of a private family and he felt sure the Bille family would take the Club from strength to strength.   The evening finished with the Ladies Roll-Up Choir serenading us with a number of songs including some with golfing themes based on the Vale.

Jamega Departs for Another Year

(taken from the Jamega Pro Tour Website)

"Long and wet best described the first day at the par 74 International Course at The Vale Golf Club near Pershore, set in the Vale of Evesham. Wet referred to the weather, "long"  best described the length of time it took the competitors to complete the golf course!

With a par of 74 very few players were managing to get into the sixties and for some while and it was not until the later starters began to come in that par was breached.

Jordan Smith, Myles Pearson, Rob Bardsley and Stuart Hemming started to find a way to undo the par each of them carding one under par 73's to briefly lead.

The James boys, David and Lee, stole their thunder and assumed the lead with 2 under par 72's. Their pomp only lasted for minutes as the last group arrived at the scorers desk with first Ian Winstanley carding a 71, then Paul Streeter bettered that with a 4 under par 70 but at last James Webber broke into the sixties with a 5 under par 69 to lead going into the second day.

A breezier day greeted the players for the second day and it was James Ablett who set an early target of 3 under par scoring a fine 69 but with the final group all going deeper into par it looked an unlikely winning total. Kris Jones, Mark Hooper, John Banbury and David James soon joined Ablett.

Stuart Hemming set a realistic target at 5 under par adding a solid 70 to his first round but with the leaders playing unfaltering golf it was not going to be good enough. In the last group Ian Winstanley and Paul Streeter, although playing good attacking golf, could only watch as James Webber continued to match all they could throw at him.

Webber continued to march on remorselessly and even had the luxury of being able to score a rare bogey at the last and still win by 3 shots adding a second 5 under par to his first round effort. Streeter (71) and Winstanley (70) shared second place on 7 under par each winning £1,750 however it was James Webber who took the well deserved first place cheque for £5,000.

The Vale International is a picturesque golf course offering stunning greens to putt on and manicured fairways to hit from. The hospitality is boundless and with fairly priced food and drink it offers an excellent golfing destination for players of every standard."

Ladies Get Buzzy

The Thursday "Roll Up" Ladies along with Jacqui Cravos: Lady Captain, Mark Heath: Course Manager and Simon Williams: Club House Manager

The Ladies section wanted to do something special to mark the

20th aniversary of the Vale Golf Club, They decided they would like to do something different that would help the enviroment in which we play golf, They came up with the unusual idea of providing some Bee Hives in which we can introduce the Great British Bumble Bee. If you havn't heard bumblebees are disappearing at such an alarming rate in Britain that scientists are warning they could be wiped out within a few years. So the Ladies Section have donated two hives which are located in woodland around the International Course and the Thursday Roll Up ladies have donated another hive which is located in woodland on the Lenches Course. They were released from their hive this afternoon by the Lady Captain Jacqui Cravos.

Hi Tech Investment

Since the club was taken over in July 2009 we have seen tremendous and contiued investment by our new owners. The latest being a state of the art launch monitor called Vector Pro. This system uses state of the art motion capture technology allowing the Profesional to monitor every aspect of the impact between club face and ball. The system measures extremly acuratly the ball speed, launch angle, back spin and side spin. Using these measurments the system then can calculate distance, fllight time, maximum height and the flight path of the ball. Once the profesional has all this data he can then determin the correct club for you.  They can determin the loft, shaft or head face that would best suit your swing. We have had the system for a month now and seen some outstanding results. 2 recent cases of this are Dave Seager who after a club fitting with the Vector Pro gained on average an extra 27 yards, and Ian Haywood who gained an average 22 yards with his new club. For More information about the Vector Pro and how it can help your game please don't hesitate to speak to Rich or a member of his team on 01386 462520.
